REQUESTING THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO RELEASE
$175,000 DESIGNATED BY COURT ORDER TO STUDY
BEACH NOURISHMENT AND STABILIZATION
WHEREAS, the State of Texas has taken judgement in certain environmental
cases; and
WHEREAS, in one specific judgement, the judgement created an escrow account
(number 0180019810) at NationsBank of Texas, N.A., in Houston, in the amount of
$175,000; and
WHEREAS, this escrow account is held "...for the joint benefit of the City of Corpus
Christi and Nueces County, Texas and for the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of
nourishment and stabilization of certain critical areas of public beach on the Gulf of
Mexico"; and
WHEREAS, the most critical erosion area of public Gulf Beach located within
Nueces County and Corpus Christi is that portion of public beach located in front of the
North Padre Island Seawall; and
WHEREAS, the Commissioners Court of Nueces County has already authorized a
viability study costing in excess of $600,000 with a portion of this study examining the
viability of the reopening of Packery Channel, a natural pass located immediately north of
the Padre Island Seawall; and
WHEREAS, a portion of the viability study will examine the environmental impacts
of the reopening of Packery Channel including the impact on beach erosion in front of the
North Padre Island Seawall and other areas of public Gulf beach;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, that the best use of the above identified funds would be to
assist in the funding of the coastal studies currently underway by Nueces County of issues
directly affecting critical public Gulf Beaches within Nueces County and the City of Corpus
Christi.
DULY adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City on the 9th day
of April, 1996.
