AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, CHAPTER 53 - TRAFFIC,
SCHEDULE V, SECTION 53-254, INCREASE OF STATE SPEED LIMIT IN
CERTAIN ZONES BY ESTABLISHING REVISED SPEED LIMITS ON
SECTIONS OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 37, S.H. 358 (PADRE ISLAND
DRIVE EXPRESSWAY), S.H. 286 (CROSSTOWN EXPRESSWAY), U.S.
HIGHWAY 181 EXPRESSWAY, S.H. 44 EXPRESSWAY, PARK ROAD 22
(SO. PADRE ISLAND DRIVE), AND S.H. 361, CONFORMING TO THE
SPEED LIMITS APPROVED BY TEXAS TRANSPORTATION
COMMISSION MINUTE ORDER 106806; PROVIDING FOR
PUBLICATION; AND PROVIDING FOR PENALTIES.
WHEREAS, the City Council approved Resolution No. 022539 requesting that the Texas
Transportation Commission adopt lower speed limits for portions of S.H. 358 (Padre Island Drive
Expressway) and S.H. 286 (Crosstown Expressway) than recommended by the local Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDoT) staff; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Transportation Commission did not follow the City's request for
lower speed limits; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Transportation Commission has exclusive authority to set these
speed limits and has requested the City Council adopt an ordinance implementing the speed limits
set by the Texas Transportation Commission Minute Order 106806; and
WHEREAS, in order for the City Prosecutors to prosecute speeding tickets on the named
roadways at Municipal Court -rather than either prosecuting them in Justice of the Peace Courts or
allowing the County to prosecute those tickets -it is necessary for City Council to adopt an ordinance
setting speed limits on the named roadways.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi Code of Ordinances, Section 53-254, Schedule
V, is hereby amended by deleting the following existing sections:
Crosstown Expressway (S.H. 286):
From a point 70.3 feet south of Lipan Street center line to a point 2,800 feet south of Gollihar

Interstate Highway 37:
From a point 430 feet east of the Staples street center line (Station 2 + 50, I.H. 37) to a point
approximately 1,750 feet west of the center line of Port Avenue (Station 59 + 50, I.H. 37) --
45 mph minimum -- All times
From a point 1,750 feet west of the center line of Port Avenue (Station 59 + 50, I.H. 37) to
a point approximately 600 feet east of the center line of Corn Products Road (Station 270 +
00, I.H. 37) -- 45 mph Minimum -- All times
North Padre Island Drive and South Padre Island Drive (S.H. 358) and park Road 22 Expressway
Main Lanes:
From a point 1,152 feet north of Leopard Street (Sta. 877 + 02.90) to a point 250 east of East

South Padre Island Drive and Park Road 22:
From a point 250 -feet east of Lakeside Drive center line to the southeast city limit (Nueces -

U.S. Highway 181:
Northbound and Southbound:
From the north city limits to a point 250 north of the center line of Belden Street -- 60 mph
Maximum -- All times; 45 mph Minimum -- All times (except for 10 mph truck crawl speeds
on upgrades of Harbor Bridge)
and, in lieu thereof, by amending/adding the following sections:
Crosstown Expressway (81-1. 286):
From a point just south of Interstate 37 (MP 0.436) to a point just north of S.H. 358

SECTION 3. A violation of these speed limits may result in a citation being issued and a
fine being assessed.
