Commemorating the Life of Dr. Hector P. Garcia
WHEREAS, Dr. Hector P. Garcia was a highly -respected, highly honored American statesman,
humanitarian and citizen of Corpus Christi; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia received his advanced education from the University of Texas, earning a Bachelor
of Arts degree in 1936 and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1940; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia served his country as an Infantry Officer, Engineer and member of the Medical
Corps during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia founded the American G.I. Forum in Corpus Christi in 1948 to assist veterans
in obtaining medical and educational benefits due them under the G.I. Bill of Rights. The G.I. Forum expanded its
mission across the United States focusing on issues and problems affecting Hispanics in this country; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia was appointed to numerous national and international positions of honor and
significance including appointments by President Lyndon B. Johnson to the National Advisory Council on
Economic Opportunity of the United States and United States Ambassador to the United Nations; and appointment
by President Jimmy Carter's to the White House Conference on Balanced National Growth and Economic
Development; and
WHEREAS, On March 26, 1994, Dr. Garcia was awarded the "Presidential Medal of Freedom" by
President Ronald Reagan; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia tirelessly labored for over 40 years to insure that all Americans were able to share
in this country's educational and economic opportunities regardless of ethnic origin. His contributions to the
community and country impacted millions of people and will be a lasting legacy for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, the passing of this visionary American statesman and humanitarian on July 26, 1996 is a loss
to the entire country, as well as his family, friends and associates.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI
That the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi for and on behalf of the citizens of the City
commemorates the life of Dr. Hector P. Garcia. He will be missed by all who knew and worked with him and our
lives are enriched for having known him. The City expresses its condolences to his family and to his friends. The
City Secretary is directed to provide his family with an official copy of this Resolution commemorating Dr. Hector
P. Garcia.
