APPROVING DESIGNATION OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE
AND HISTORY AS THE MARINE ARCHEOLOGY REPOSITORY FOR THE
STATE OF TEXAS, INCLUDING STATE FUNDING FOR MARINE
CONSERVATION, AS A CORPUS CHRISTI CITY COUNCIL LEGISLATIVE
PRIORITY FOR THE SEVENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE.
Recitals
The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History has been the designated repository for
the 1554 Spanish Shipwreck Collection since 1984. It has since been named the repository for seven
other marine archeology collections. Further, it is the only marine repository in the State of Texas.
In order to be designated the repository for the 1554 Spanish Shipwreck Collection the
Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History had to agree to:
• hire a curator to care for the artifacts,
• provide a facility with a stable environment for storage of the artifacts,
• provide public access to the artifacts through exhibits and programs, and
• provide the facilities and staff for the ongoing conservation of the artifacts.
all of which are currently in place at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History and will be
very expensive to duplicate.
The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History has the only marine conservation
laboratory in Texas, which is needed to support the constant conservation treatment needed for
marine artifacts, a very costly process.
In 1996 the Corpus Christi City Council supported the proposal that the Corpus Christi
Museum of Science and History become the repository for the famed La Salle collection.
Lieutenant Govemor Bob Bullock has since proposed that a new museum of Texas history be created
in Austin and that the La Salle collection be exhibited in the new museum.
Naming the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History as the repository for the La Salle
collection would make establishing the new Texas History Museum more cost effective by not
duplicating the costly marine conservation laboratory. From a typical shipwreck there are more than
enough duplicate artifacts to support a number of exhibits. The La Salle collection is very large and
would require additional space and operating costs for the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and
History, but would be much more expensive for the State of Texas to build new.
By sharing the costs, both the City of Corpus Christi and the State of Texas, and their
citizens, would benefit by enhanced statewide services such as a travelling La Salle exhibit that are
currently unavailable.
