BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI,
TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF STATE HIGHWAY 44
FROM THE CITY LIMITS OF CORPUS CHRISTI TO THE CITY LIMITS
OF ROBSTOWN, TEXAS, AS THE CESAR CHAVEZ MEMORIAL HIGHWAY
IN HONOR OF THE LATE FARM WORKER LABOR LEADER
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was the founder of the National Farm Workers Association, an
organization that was the first of many peaceful attempts to secure improved working conditions
for farm laborers; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez's inspired leadership, unwavering commitment, and courageous
personal sacrifices have helped American farm workers earn decent wages, medical benefits, and
protection from dangerous pesticides; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his ability to find solutions to our country's most pressing social
and economic problems through nonviolent means, Mr. Chavez was posthumously awarded the
nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and
WHEREAS, The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi wishes to recognize his many
contributions by supporting the designation of a section of State Highway 44 as the Cesar
Chavez Memorial Highway;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. That the City Council of Corpus Christi request the City Secretary to
forward this resolution to the Nueces County Commissioner's Court for additional support, and
to the Texas Department of Transporation ("TXDOT"), the local legislative delegation, and the
local district engineer for TXDOT, for submission and consideration by the State of Texas.
