HomeMy WebLinkAbout023551 RES - 01/26/1999RESOLUTION SUPPORTING INITIATIVES TO RESTORE FUNDING TO CONSTRUCT A MIDFIELD REPLACEMENT CONTROL TOWER AND TERMINAL RADAR APPROACH CONTROL FACILITY (TRACON) ON THE ORIGINAL 2001 TIMEFRAME. WHEREAS, Corpus Christi International Airport is a vital link in the air transportation system of this nation; and WHEREAS, Corpus Christi International Airport is critical to our regional and local economy; and WHEREAS, it is the mission of the City of Corpus Christi to aggressively maintain the ability to meet and exceed the growing aviation needs of the region by operating, maintaining and developing Corpus Christi International Airport to provide safe and efficient service; and WHEREAS, continued capital improvements are required to ensure the quality, quantity and affordability of air service necessary to the vitality and prosperity of the region, the City of Corpus Christi, and its citizens; and WHEREAS, the replacement of the Terminal Building and the Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities need to occur concurrently ensure the continued safe use of Corpus Christi International Airport; and WHEREAS, the Federal Aviation Administration has already leased a midfield location on Corpus Christi International Airport and has already started the design to replace the Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities; and WHEREAS, replacement of the new Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities were originally scheduled to be completeded in Fiscal Year 2001 concurrently with the Terminal Building construction; and WHEREAS, construction funding has been delayed until at least Fiscal Year 2007; and WHEREAS, the delay of the replacement of the Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities will potentially cause the line of sight view to be obstructed creating a safety hazard or possibly discontinued use of the primary runway 13-31 when the new Terminal Facility is constructed. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1. The City of Corpus Christi requests the Federal Aviation Administration restore the funding necessary for completing relocation of the Air Traffic Control and Terminal Radar Approach Control Facilities to the mid -field location at Corpus Christi International Airport in Fiscal Year 2001 to allow the construction to be performed concurrently with the Terminal Reconstruction in order to avoid the operational impacts and potential safety hazards associated with line of sight H:\LEG-DI R\VERONICA\A L I S ON\ORD 99.600\A GO RD99.610 !x?.3551 blockage from the existing Tower with the Terminal Reconstruction, which has a tentative construction start date of January 2000.
