HomeMy WebLinkAbout023583 RES - 03/23/1999RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JANET F. HARTE WHEREAS, Janet F. Harte died February 23, 1999, at the age of 75, leaving Corpus Christi and the nation a legacy of citizenship and community works; and WHEREAS, with her energy and vision, Janet F. Harte advanced a wide variety of organizations and causes that enriched the lives of her fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, illustrations of a few of her contributions include: a founder in the 1950s and long-time sustainer of Planned Parenthood of South Texas, a strong voice against racial violence in Corpus Christi after the assassination of Martin Luther King, a crusader for recycling and other environmental conservation efforts, and a leader of the Federation for American Immigration Reform; and WHEREAS, Janet F. Harte, along with her husband Ed Harte, was an unsurpassed philanthropist, generously supporting a variety of charities over many years, and, in 1998, donating nearly $20,000,000 for a performing arts center, a library, Metro Ministries, and other community facilities and programs, being named Newsmakers of the Year for their example of generosity; and WHEREAS, Janet F. Harte lived her convictions in her daily life, leaving vibrant memories for her many friends and abetter community as her gift; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1. The City Council recognizes and honors the legacy left by Janet F. Harte to the citizens of this community through a life well lived. SECTION 2.
