DECLARING A STATE OF DISASTER BECAUSE OF THE IMMINENT
THREAT POSED BY HURRICANE BRET; AND DECLARING AN
EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, the approach of Hurricane Bret posed an imminent threat of widespread or
severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property resulting from flood, wind, storm, wave action, and
other kinds of disaster as defined in Section 418.004, Texas Government Code, which required
emergency action; and
WHEREAS, The Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi determined that extraordinary
measures must be taken to alleviate the suffering of people and to protect or rehabilitate property;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi's Emergency Management Plan should be activated.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE PRESIDING OFFICER OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, HEREBY PROCLAIM AND DECLARE
THAT:
SECTION 1. A state of disaster is declared for the City of Corpus Christi.
SECTION 2. This declaration of local disaster activates the recovery and rehabilitation
aspects of all applicable local or interjurisdictional emergency management plans and authorizes the
furnishing of aid and assistance under the declaration. The preparedness and response aspects of the
plans are activated as provided in the plans.
SECTION 3. This declaration of local disaster shall be in effect until terminated by the City
Council.
SECTION 4. This declaration shall be filed promptly with the City Secretary, and shall be
given prompt and general publicity.
SO DECLARED AND ORDERED this the 24th day of August, 1999.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance an emergency exists requiring
suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances at two regular meetings: I/we,
therefore, request that you suspend said Charter rule and pass this ordinance finally on the date it is
introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council.
