SUPPORTING THE NUECES COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT IN
THEIR EFFORT TO REGAIN OWNERSHIP OF THE OLD COUNTY
COURTHOUSE IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR GRANT FUNDING UNDER
THE STATEWIDE COURTHOUSE PRESERVATION PROGRAM BY
AUTHORIZING THE COURT TO INSTITUTE TAX FORECLOSURE
PROCEEDINGS, SELL THE PROPERTY, AND, DIRECTING THE CITY
MANAGER TO QUITCLAIM THE CITY'S INTEREST IN THE PROPERTY
TO THE COURT FOR THE MUTUAL PUBLIC PURPOSES OF THE CITY
AND THE COUNTY.
WHEREAS, in the 1999 legislative session a $50 million Courthouse Preservation Program
was established, of which the County Commissioner's Court ("Court") would be eligible to apply
for a grant of $4 million to rehabilitate the Old County Courthouse; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds and determines that rehabilitating the Old County
Courthouse at the Gateway to Corpus Christi would serve the public purposes of historical
preservation tourism development, and neighborhood improvement; and
WHEREAS, the Court must own the Old County Courthouse to qualify for grant funds; and
WHEREAS, the Old County Courthouse is presently in a state of disrepair creating visual
and physical burdens on public and private property; and
WHEREAS, the Court is requesting all Nueces County taxing entities to join with it in
accomplishing its goal to regain ownership of the Old County Courthouse, by authorizing a tax
foreclosure on the Old County Courthouse; and
WHEREAS, the City Council deems it in the best interest of the Citizens of Corpus Christi
for Nueces County to own and rehabilitate the Old County Courthouse; and
WHEREAS, there is no likelihood of the City's receiving back taxes on the Old county
Courthouse property.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS THAT:
SECTION 1. The City Council supports the Nueces County Commissioner's Courts efforts
to regain ownership of the Old County Courthouse.
SECTION 2. The City Council authorizes the Court to (a) institute tax foreclosure
proceeding upon the owners of the Old County Courthouse for failure to pay back taxes owed to the
City of Corpus Christi, and (b) sell the Old County Courthouse on the courthouse steps.

SECTION 3. The City Manager is directed to execute a quitclaim deed to the County
Commissioner's Court conveying the City's undivided interest in the Old County Courthouse for the
mutual public purposes of the City and the County.
