AN ORDINANCE
AMENDING THE CITY CODE OF ORDINANCES, CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI CHAPTER 53, TRAFFIC, ARTICLE I IN GENERAL, BY ADDING
NEW SECTION 53-16, REGARDING THE RESTRAINT OF A DOG IN AN
UNENCLOSED MOTOR VEHICLE: PROVIDING FOR SEVERANCE;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE: PROVIDING FOR PENAL TIES
AS SET FORTH IN SECTION 1-6 OF THE CITY CODE OF ORDINANCES;
AND PROVIDING FOR PUBLICATION.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI,
TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Chapter 53 of the Code of Ordinances, Article I, is amended by adding new Section
53-16 to read as follows:
See, 53-16. Transporting dogs in motor vehicles.
Jill In this section "tether" shall mean a rope. chain or the like. by which a dog is fastened
to an unenclosed motor vehicle so as to limit its range of movement.
(.h) No person shall transport any dog in a motor vehicle in a public place unless:
ill the dog is safely enclosed within the vehicle: or.
ill if traveling in an unenclosed vehicle including but not limited to convertibles. pick-
up and flat bed trucks:
a. the vehicle has side and tail racks to a height of at least 46 inches extendin~ vertically
from the floor of the vehicle'
.b... the dog is cross tethered by a minimum of two tethers. with one tether each being
affixed to the opposite side of the vehicle and both tethers beinii attached to the collar
or harness of the do~ to prevent the dog from being thrown. iumpin~ or falling from
the vehicle: or.
c. the dog is confined inside a locked container or cage secured to the vehicle to prevent
wmecessary iostling and to prevent the animal from being thrown from the vehicle.
SECTION 2. If for any reason any section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word or
provision of this ordinance shall be held invalid or unconstitutional by final judgment of a court of
competent jurisdiction, it shall not affect any other section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase,

word or provision of this ordinance. for it is the definite intent of this City Council that every section,
paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word or provision hereof be given full force and effect for
its purpose,
SECTION 3. Section I of this ordinance is effective upon final adoption by the City Council.
SECTION 4. Violations of this ordinance shall be subject to the penalties provided in Section 1-6
of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Corpus Christi.
SECTION 5. Publication shall be made in the official publication of the City of Corpus Christi as
required by the City Charter of the City of Corpus Christi,
