DESIGNATING TEXAS A & M UNIVERSITY - CORPUS CHRISTI AS AN
ANCHOR TENANT IN THE MULTI PURPOSE ARENA AND EXPRESSING
THE CITY'S INTENT TO NEGOTIATE A FAIR LEASE AGREEMENT FOR
USE OF THE ARENA BY THE UNIVERSITY
WHEREAS, Texas A & M University Corpus Christi is an important asset to Corpus
Christi, its quality of life and its economic future, and
WHEREAS, the development of the NCAA Division I sports program at Texas A & M
University Corpus Christi is a benefit to the Corpus Christi community and to the goal of
enhancing the position of Texas A & M University Corpus Christi as a regional university of the
highest quality, and
WHEREAS, the Islanders men's and women's basketball programs are the key
foundation to the Division I sports program at Texas A & M University Corpus Christi, and
WHEREAS, on November 7, 2000, the citizens of Corpus Christi approved the
implementation of a 1/8 cent sales tax to pay for the construction and operation ora Multi-
Purpose Arena, and
WHEREAS, the City and Texas A & M University Corpus Christi expect that the Multi-
Purpose Arena will be the home of Islanders Basketball,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, THAT:
Section 1: The City recognizes that the Texas A & M University Corpus Christi
Islanders will be an anchor tenant in the Multi-Purpose Arena utilizing approximately 35 event
nights each year.
Section 2: As such, the City will provide representatives of the Texas A & M
University Corpus Christi athletic program the opportunity to provide feedback on facilities and
design of the Multi-Purpose Arena at various times during the design process to ensure that the
facility meets the program's needs.
Section 3: The City expresses its intention to be an active party to all lease
negotiations with Texas A & M University Corpus Christi and that all such agreements will be
approved by the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi prior to their becoming effective.
Section 4: The City commits itself to the negotiation of a fair lease agreement with
Texas A & M University Corpus Christi which provides for the success of the University's
athletic program while maintaining the financial viability of the Arena.
Section 5: The City further commits to the adoption of a booking policy for the
Multi-Purpose Arena which recognizes the status of Texas A & M University Corpus Christi as
an anchor tenant in the selection of dates and other aspects of the reservation process.
