DECLARA TION OF LOCAL DISASTER BY
PROCLAMATION OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI
WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Texas on September 1,2005, under the
authority of the Texas Disaster Act of 1975, proclaimed that Hurricane Katrina, a
disaster In sister states, has created an emergency disaster and emergency conditions
for the people of the State of Texas, and directed that all necessary measures, both
public and private as authorized under S418,015, Texas Government Code, be
Implemented to meet the disaster.
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi has been asked by the Governor to shelter
refugees who have been rendered homeless by Hurricane Katrina and flooding of the
City of New Orleans;
WHEREAS, extraordinary measures may be needed to feed, house, and provide
medical and other essential support to the refugees;
WHEREAS, this public calamity requires emergency action;
WHEREAS, Section 418.108 of the Texas Government Code and Section 16-3 of the
Code of Ordinances of the City of Corpus Christi authorize the Mayor of the City of
Corpus Christi, as the presiding office of the governing body of a political subdivision, to
declare a local state of disaster;
WHEREAS, I, as the Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi, have determined that
extraordinary measures must be taken to alleviate the suffering of people and to protect
or rehabilitate property; and
WHEREAS, I believe that the City of Corpus Christi's Emergency Management Plan
should be activated;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE PRESIDING OFFICER OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, HEREBY PROCLAIM AND DECLARE:
Section 1, That a state of disaster exists for the City of Corpus Christi,
Section 2. That this declaration of local disaster takes effect immediately and remains
In effect for the next seven days. unless terminated earlier.
Section 3. That this declaration directs the City Manager to activate the recovery and
rehabilitation aspects of all applicable local or inter-jurisdictional emergency
management plans; authorizes the furnishing of all aid and assistance, as deemed
necessary or desirable by those administering the plans, and activates the
preparedness and response aspects of the plans.
Section 4. That this declaration shall be filed promptly with the City Secretary, and
shall be given prompt and general publicity
