PROCLAMATION OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI
WHEREAS, the approach of Hurricane Ike presented an imminent threat of widespread or
severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property resulting from flood, wind, storm, wave
action, and other public calamity resulting there from which required emergency action; and
WHEREAS, Section 418.108 of the Texas Government Code and Section 16-3 of the
Code of Ordinances of the City of Corpus Christi authorize the Mayor of the City of Corpus
Christi, as the presiding officer of the governing body of a political subdivision, to declare a
local state of disaster; and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi's Emergency Management Plan was activated on
September 9, 2008; and
WHEREAS, the enormous size and forceful power of Hurricane Ike did in fact cause the
City of Corpus Christi to strongly recommend persons to evacuate various parts of the City
and to transport those with special needs to San Antonio, Texas on September 10, 2008;
and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Ike did cause damage to the City of Corpus Christi, resulting in loss
of property from flood, wave action and storm surge and the damage assessment
continues; and
WHEREAS, on September 19, 2008, I, as the Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi,
determined that extraordinary measures must be taken to alleviate the suffering of people
and to protect or rehabilitate property; and
WHEREAS, on September 26, 2008, I, as Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi, determine
that said extraordinary measures must continue;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE PRESIDING OFFICER OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, HEREBY PROCLAIM AND DECLARE:
Section 1. That a state of disaster shall continue for the City of Corpus Christi.
Section 2. That this continuation of declaration of local disaster remains in effect for the
next seven (7) days, unless continued by consent of the City Council.
Section 3. That this declaration directs the City Manager to continue the recovery and
rehabilitation aspects of all applicable local or interjurisdictional emergency management
plans; continues the furnishing of all aid and assistance, as deemed necessary or desirable
by those administering the plans, and continues the preparedness and response aspects
of the plans.
Section 4. That this declaration shall be filed promptly with the City Secretary, and shall
be given prompt and general publicity.
