RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL OPTION TRANSPORTATION
FUNDING LEGISLATION FOR THE 81ST LEGISLATIVE SESSION OF
TEXAS.
WHEREAS, the 81sT Texas Legislative Session of the Texas
Legislature is currently underway;
WHEREAS, the State of Texas is facing a transportation funding crisis
due to factors such as revenue sources that have not kept up with inflation,
large increases in construction costs, federal rescissions, diversion of State
transportation funds, an aging transportation system, and future uncertainty of
the federal Highway Trust Fund;
WHEREAS, an integrated system of highways, local streets, rail, and
aviation facilities is essential to the movement of people and goods within and
through our region in order to continue to have economic success; and
WHEREAS, local governments across our State are funding a larger
share of transportation improvements through local sales taxes, property
taxes, toll roads, and allocations from general funds due to decreasing federal
and State revenues;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. The City Council approves supporting legislation currently
under consideration in the Texas House of Representatives and Senate,
which provides for local option funding of transportation projects through a
local election process.
SECTION 2. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to our State
legislative delegation and a request be made to add Nueces County to the list
of counties eligible under the proposed legislation.
