Dear Mr. Chapa, Mr. Neal:
This is to inform you that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, at its June 13, 2013 meeting, approved a
proposal to change the name of the beach named Corpus Christi Beach to North Beach. The change was
enacted in response to the proposal that the Board considered last month, to change the name of the community
of North Beach to Corpus Christi Beach. As you know, the latter change was rejected (an official letter of
notification was mailed to the City Council following the Board's May 9th meeting. Hopefully you have
received it).
In reviewing the supporting documentation for the community name, the Board determined that the City
Council's July 2012 resolution had intended for the name North Beach to apply to both the community and the
beach. In approving the recent change, both the community and the beach are now officially named North
Beach. The name has been recorded in the official Federal geographic names database and will be reflected on
future Federal maps and documents.
Our apologies for any confusion. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely yours,
Jennifer Runyon, research staff

Dear Ms. Yost:
Last month the City of Corpus Christi, Texas received correspondence from you
asking for a recommendation regarding a proposal submitted by Joann Gilbertson to change
the name of an area within the City from "North Beach" to "Corpus Christi Beach". Please
be advised that the City of Corpus Christi is against the proposed name change as requested
by Ms. Gilbertson.
While previous action by the City in 1959 had been taken to name that area Corpus
Christi Beach, please be advised that on July 24, 2012, the Corpus Christi City Council
approved an Ordinance in two separate readings to rename that area "North Beach".
Attached please find a certified copy of the ordinance approved by the City Council along
with the Geographic Name Proposal Recommendation noting our rejection of Ms.
Gilbertson' s proposal.
Please advise if additional information in necessary. Thank you for your attention
to this matter.

Dear Supervisors:
RECEIVED
JUN 2 2 2012
L MY SECRETARY'S OFFICE
The U. S. Board on Geographic Names is responsible by law for adjudicating decisions
regarding geographic names for use by the departments and agencies of the Federal
government. The Board has received a proposal to change the name of North Beach, an
unincorporated populated place inside the City of Corpus Christi, to Corpus Christi
Beach. Because acceptance of any name is very important to the Board, we would like
your opinion regarding this proposal. We are also contacting the Texas State Names
Authority, Nueces County, and the Corpus Christi Area Heritage Society for their
opinions on the proposal.
Please note that the populated place in question is separate from the beach and the
incorporated civil entity of the City of Corpus Christi. We define a populated place as a
"Place or area with clustered or scattered buildings and a permanent human population
(city, settlement, town, village). A populated place is usually not incorporated and by
definition has no legal boundaries." In this case, Corpus Christi Beach, as proposed,
would become the official name of an unincorporated populated place within the City of
Corpus Christi; as it stands today, our records reflect North Beach as an unincorporated
populated place inside the incorporated boundary of the City of Corpus Christi. Our
records also reflect the official name of the beach is Corpus Christi Beach, with a variant
name of North Beach. The official name of the civil entity is the City of Corpus Christi.
The 1959 Resolution (enclosed) appears to change the name of the populated place from
then North Beach to Corpus Christi Beach. However, this change was not reflected in
Federal products including Census records, NOAA charts, or USGS topographic maps,
and was never forwarded to the U.S. Board, which adjudicates name changes and new
names. As such, our records reflect the official name is North Beach.
According to our research, the City of Corpus Christi considered changing the name back
to North Beach as early as 2009. We welcome anything you can add to the record that
will help us better understand the timeline. We are particularly interested in local usage
of the proposed and current names, and the application of the names.
We have. enclosed for your review a copy of the proposal, along with a map showing the
location of the populated place and a Geographic Name Proposal Recommendation form
to facilitate a response from your office. In order for the Board to review all responses
and vote on this issue, we ask that if possible you respond with an opinion by August 30,
2012. Please note that if no response is received, the Board will consider your opinion to
be "neutral" and will make a decision that might affect the use of names in your area of
interest.
If you have any questions or to submit your recommendation, we may be contacted by mail
at the address above; by telephone at (703) 648-4552; by fax at (703) 648-4549; or by e-mail
at <BGNEXEC@usgs.gov>.

Proposal: to change a name to recognize local usage
Map: USGS Corpus Christi 1:24,000
Proponent: Joann Gilbertson; Corpus Christi, Texas
Administrative area: None
Previous BGN Action: None
Names associated with feature:
GN1S: North Beach (FID 1342688)
Local Usage: Corpus Christi Beach (Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, tourism
sites) North Beach
Published: Corpus Christi Beach (City of Corpus Christi Resolution, 1959; North Beach
News, 2007); North Beach (USGS maps since 1951; NOAA charts since 1991; City of
Corpus Christi Resolution, 1959; North Beach News, 2007); Rincon (Handbook of Texas
Online, 2012)
Case Summary: This proposal is to change the name of the unincorporated community of North
Beach to Corpus Christi Beach, in order to reflect a change passed in a 1959 resolution by the
City of Corpus Christi. The community is located in the City of Corpus Christi in Nueces
County. According to the resolution, the name North Beach was changed to Corpus Christi
Beach since, "The residents thereof are now desirous of changing the name of such area. The
portion of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, lying north of the ship channel of the Port of Corpus
Christi and encompassing all of Brooklyn Addition and the Beach Hotel Addition be and the
same is hereby officially known as `Corpus Christi Beach'.
The Texas State Historical Association refers to the area as Rincon, a name that derives from
nearby Rincon Point, and states that by 1900, "Rincon [was] now sometimes referred to as North
Beach." The feature was first labeled on USGS maps as North Beach in 1951. NOAA charts
showed but did not label the feature until 1991, after which it was labeled North Beach.
The proponent, a real estate developer and member of the Corpus Christi Beach Association,
contacted the BGN regarding the continued use by the Federal government of the name North Beach
in reference to the populated place. She is asking that the BGN change the name to reflect local
usage and preference, and to recognize the name established by the city in 1959. A highway sign
points to "Corpus Christi Beach," although it is not clear whether the name refers to the community
or the beach itself, which is already officially named Corpus Christi Beach.
In 2007, the President of the Corpus Christi Beach Association recommended to the City
Manager that the name of Corpus Christi Beach be changed "back to its original name North
Beach." After several years of marketing studies, the City dropped the idea, reportedly due to the
high cost of highway signage and other updates.
In addition to the beach, GNIS lists one other feature with "Corpus Christi Beach" in its name;
Corpus Christi Beachwalk, located within the community in question, was recently added to the
database.
