Engineering Services P. O. Box 9277 Corpus Christi, Texas 78469 Subject: Port Avenue Box Culvert Altemative Imorovements Salt Flats Drainage Improvements - Ph II Citv Project No. 91359 and 91360 Dear Jerry: At our coordination meeting on January 9, 2009 for the Salt Flats Drainage Improvements and for TxDOT's North Port Avenue Improvements we were requested to determine the sizing requirement and prepare a preliminary estimate of probable construction cost for an alternative to replace completely a portion of the existing box culverts under Port Avenue. This alternative would be in lieu of the presently proposed lowering of the middle portion of all the box culverts under Port Avenue. The box replacement akemative was proposed since the pavement above the culverts will be completely removed and replaced with the Port Avenue project. Preliminary sizing requirements show that three existing boxes will have to be removed and two new approx. 8' wide by 9' tall boxes constructed to provide the same cross-sectional area. An estimate of probable construction cost is attached and amounts to approx. $200,000. This is approx. $30,000 less than the preliminary estimate for the other method originally proposed ($230,000 with contingencies). If the City wishes to add the alternative improvements at Port Avenue to the Phase II portion of the project presently being designed we request that our engineering fee be amended in the amount of $22,000 This amount is for the engineering services to amend the existing plans and spermcations to include these improvements to the project for the .design, bidding Please review and let us know how we should proceed. We will be happy to meet with staff to discuss the status and issues. Sincerely, URBAN ENGINEERING Mark Maroney, P.E. ~` Ln~ MM/ AMEND.
