When the roof deck fell back in March, i observed that there appeared to be no top steel present in the roof deck where the Contractor sawcut. Per the original design plans, there should be #3's on 12"centers across the top of the roof deck. This steel would provide shear and moment resistance at the contact point with the walls below. Our assessment of the load bearing capacity of the existing roof deck is based upon the original design plans that call for that steel. if the steel is not present, then the roof deck may not be able to withstand the fill and compaction as proposed in our design plans. There is a company out of College Station that performs concrete x-rays that can locate steel in concrete. They can meet us next week during our inspection of the roof deck and x-ray the concrete to determine if the#3's are present. Given that we have evidence that the design steel may not have been Installed according to the original design plans, I recommend that the City allow RVE to contract with this company to x-ray the concrete and also allow RVE to perform additional design calculations to determine the structural capabilities of the existing roof deck if the steel is not present. We can perform this work for an additional$3,000. Let me know if the City would like for RVE to perform this additional work. Thanks, D. Scott Jones, P.E. Civil Group Manager RVE, Inc.
