ISSUE: City staff and Freese and Nichols, Inc. seawater desalination team members will conduct a workshop for the Mayor and Council Members that covers seawater desalination for the Coastal Bend. BACKGROUND: The City of Corpus Christi is the regional water supplier for the Coastal Bend, which includes a customer base made of municipal, industrial, institutional, and commercial customers. After the 2011 drought of record, a group was formed to investigate potential sources for an uninterruptible water supply as a new water source for this area. The City of Corpus Christi Seawater Desalination project began from this investigation. A key feature of the project was the production of potable water, which would allow for utilization of the existing potable water distribution system. The project would produce public drinking water for the benefit of all customers. On Monday, April 26, 2021, Water Utilities staff will host the Mayor and City Council at the Texas State Aquarium for a half-day workshop covering seawater desalination. The workshop will provide an opportunity for open discussion and answers provided by industry experts.
