HomeMy WebLinkAbout033321 RES - 03/19/2024Resolution Resolution of the Corpus Christi City Council naming and dedicating the City Council Chambers in honor of the late Mayor Betty Turner, Corpus Christi's first female Mayor, and naming the City Council Chambers in her honor to recognize and commemorate Mayor Betty Turner for her extraordinary civic contributions to the City of Corpus Christi and her extraordinary devotion to serving its people. WHEREAS, the late Mayor Betty Turner served as the City of Corpus Christi's first female Mayor from 1987 to 1991; and WHEREAS, Mayor Betty Turner was a highly respected and dedicated advocate for the community, and her achievements are too numerous to list but include the following: assisted with preventing the closure of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, co - leading the effort to establish the Regional Transportation Authority in 1986, preserving the naval base hospital, and promoting a naval presence in Corpus Christi; and WHEREAS, Mayor Betty Turner's life was the epitome of civic service and her significant contributions indelibly changed the city for the better; and WHEREAS, Mayor Betty Turner was the City's first female Mayor who's legacy as a leader leaves behind devotion to civic participation and progress, paving the way and inspiring future female Mayors and female leaders in our community; and WHEREAS, in honor of Mayor Betty Turner, the Corpus Christi City Council has chosen to recognize and commemorate her civic legacy. N OW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS THAT: S ection 1. The City Council Chambers are hereby named the Mayor Betty Turner Council Chambers. S ection 2. For purposes of the Texas Open Meetings Act and all legal notices, the "Mayor Betty Turner Council Chambers" may also be referred to as "Council Chambers." S ection 3. This Resolution shall become effective on the date of final City Council approval.
